How to build self-trust?
Ways to build Self-Trust
You often
make a promise to yourself that you’re going to build that ritual or inculcate that habit in your
routine but because of self-doubt and lack of willpower, you end up breaking
that promise and this leads to a lack of self-trust.
Here are
some which can help you to build unshakable self-trust:
1.
Be minimalistic:
Less is More! Being minimalistic means focusing
on just one thing or one project at a time. When you try to do all the things
at the same time you’ll always end up feeling drained and unmotivated.
If you try to inculcate say 5 habits
together, you’ll reach nowhere because you have just gotten out of your comfort
zone and you will not be able to push yourself so much, and if you don’t, it
will lead to incomplete tasks and hence demotivation.
So try to go about as slow as
possible, try to do only one thing at a time rather than trying to do 100
things, it will give you a sense of accomplishment which further helps in
developing trust in yourself.
It is easy to complete one task at a
time.
2.
Set your minimum (and not only
maximum):
Suddenly one day you decide that I’m
going to work out for 1 hour every day from tomorrow or I’m gonna wake up at 5
am or I’m gonna study for 4 hours every day.
Here’s where we make the mistake. We
always set the maximum limit and when the next day arrives, we find all kinds
of excuses to avoid accomplishing the goal we had set because it seems
unachievable.
Always set a minimum limit e.g.
instead of setting a goal like “I’ll study 4 hours every day” set it like “I’ll
study for 1-hour minimum and 4 hours maximum” or “I’ll work out for 30 minutes
minimum and 1-hour maximum”, now even if you study for 1 hour you will feel
accomplished but when you set it to 4 hours and even if you study for 1 hour
you will still feel that you were not able to fulfill your expectations, which
will ultimately lead to demotivation. Therefore, always remember to set a
minimum limit at least you’ll end up doing something – “Something is better
than nothing”.
3.
Acknowledge your strengths and
achievements:
Everyone is gifted with a unique set of strengths that remain buried unless you are willing to take the initiative to dig deep to find them!
Acknowledging your achievements and
strengths helps you get a better understanding of yourself and arouse
confidence. It helps you to record and reflect on your small wins which assure
you that you can believe in yourself, this way you will be able to develop a
deeper and stronger relationship with yourself.
With every goal you achieve you shed
a little self-doubt and you start to realize that you are deserving and worthy
of it because you have enough skills and abilities to accomplish it.
Your achievements can be as small as:
·
Waking up 10 minutes earlier than
your normal time.
·
Making your bed yourself in the
morning.
·
Eating something healthy instead of
consuming processed food.
·
Surviving a difficult day at work.
·
Doing something despite feeling
tired.
·
Trying to inculcate a new habit.
·
Taking the stairs despite the
elevator.
·
Doing something despite feeling the
fear of judgment.
·
Helping a stranger.
·
Winning the trust of somebody.
· Coming up with a new idea.
· Receiving a compliment from someone.
We often fail to acknowledge our
strengths and our small achievements but if you quietly introspect, we will be
able to come up with something which will add fuel to our process of becoming a
more confident person. Your achievements can be big or small, but at the end of
the day, they are all achievements, so why only count the ones which are big
and less, why not count the ones which are small but are more!
Absolutely anything which kicks you
and makes you feel fulfilled can be counted in as an achievement. So always try
and record them.
4.
Make a small promise to yourself
every day:
Self-trust is like a muscle that can
be built by exercising it daily. Make very small promises to yourself and be
determined to honor them. You must get in the habit of honoring the promises
you make to yourself, you can gain momentum by giving yourself one task every
day that you promise yourself to complete.
The task can be as simple as:
·
Complimenting someone.
·
Acknowledging your small wins.
·
Brushing your teeth before sleeping.
·
Making your bed.
·
Eating anything healthy.
·
Helping your mom with daily chores.
This way
you can develop your life as a whole. E.g. it will help you boost
self-confidence or you can even develop a new habit in your routine just by
making one small promise to yourself every day!
5.
Be kind to yourself:
Self-compassion is the most underrated word in today’s world because everyone beats themselves up for the smallest of mistakes they make, become frustrated, and give up quickly.
Self-trust is not something that can
be developed overnight as you need to be very kind and patient with yourself.
It needs a lot of persistence to develop unshakable trust in yourself. You need
to understand that there will be times you will fail and make mistakes and
there is no need to get angry and feel frustrated, just acknowledge it and
don’t be disheartened, continue to go in the same direction until you reach
your destination.
Trust me, when you turn a setback
into a comeback, you feel even more confident, you’ll realize that you are
capable and you can turn any situation around.
Your pace might be slow but when your
direction is right and your efforts are sincere, no one can stop you in your
pursuit!
“Self-trust is the first secret of
success.”
